Dissolve soda in the hot water and mix alternately with the flour sifted with the salt. In a small bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt, whereas in a large mixer bowl cream butter with granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until pale and fluffy.

Lastly, add the chopped nuts and the pieces of semisweet chocolate. The original recipe calls for higher amounts of the sugar, flour, eggs, salt, and baking soda and includes hot water and shortening which the modified recipe does not call for. Flavor with the vanilla and drop by half.
Makes about 100 (2 inch) cookies. Add the eggs to the butter one by one and beat after each addition.
